According to legend, in the 1 st century Elias - the Jew from Mtskheta brought the Robe of Christ from Jerusalem, one of the most sacred relics of Christianity to Georgia (claimed to be buried in Svetitskhoveli Cathedral) in Mtskheta. St Mary sent St. Andrew the Apostle, St. Simon the Canaanite and St. Matthias to Georgia to preach the Christian faith, while in the early 4 th century, following the teachings of St. Nino of Cappadocia (14-year-old female saint) Christianity was proclaimed an official religion in eastern Georgia as early as 337 AD. In 325, the First Council of Nicea was attended by a bishop of Pitiunt, a city in western Georgia. Since then the Christianity became inseparable part of national identity for the Georgian people. Ancient wine vessels made of clay, bronze and silver; gold cups for drinking wine; wine barrels dated to the 2 nd or even 3 rd millennium BC; and vine seeds found in the ancient tombs of the Bronze age all leave a continuous story of the history of Georgian wine.
Today, over 500 varieties of grape grow in this small country and Georgian wines are well known for their unique properties and characteristics. Lately, Georgian “Qvevri” wine referred as amber wine has taken a place in the world definition of wines following red, white and rose wines. In wine tours you’ll not only taste bottled wines but visit traditional wine-cellars of local farmers and see how they make wine, taste their home-made wines and Chacha – Georgian fire-water and see what Tamada (toast master) tradition means. If travelling in September-October, you can even participate in Rtveli (grape harvest) and make wine yourself.
