Description

The province of Imereti was originally part of the ancient Colchis kingdom. A legendary place Argonauts sailed for the Golden Fleece.

Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of a massively rich and thriving Hellenistic culture.

Imereti has been a place of highly sophisticated culture. Some of Imereti’s cultural and historical monuments date back to as early as the Neolithic (late Stone Age) era, however many modern architectural accomplishments can also be found in the region.

Kutaisi is elegant with tree lined streets of the 19thcentury houses stretching down to the banks of the Rioni River. In the Jewish Quarter the Synagogues demonstrate the long history of the Georgian Jewish community here.

Gelati Monastery and Academy were founded by King David Aghmashenebeli, in the 12th century. The popular and revered King David wanted to be buried in a place where everyone coming to the monastery would step on his grave and according to legend the gravestone is the same height as the King himself. The monastery is UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts with 2-million stone alter mosaic.

Prometheus Karst Cave is located in Tskaltubo. It was opened to the public couple of years ago and has already become one of the most requested stops. Its underground halls full of stalactites and stalagmites are best examples of nature’s unbelievable art.

Okatse Canyon is a wonderful place for taking a short walk. On a bridge-way attached to the cliff you’ll have a chance to walk along the canyon and see beautiful forest of the gorge as well as tiny Imeretian houses if you choose to return through the village.
