Description

The main city of Adjara province located in the far west of country at the Black Sea coast is romantic Batumi. This is town with a long history and beautiful architecture. You can wonder in its central part and see newly built charming Piazza Square, old mosque, synagogue, Catholic and Armenian Gregorian churches, houses with wonderful 19th century architecture and the modern designs, seaside boulevard and the colorful agricultural market.

Buzzling town in summer is quite for the rest of the year and if you wish to enjoy the serenity of the seaside and pay visits to some interesting museums you can easily choose any time in spring and autumn.

Botanical Gardens were established in 1912 by Russian botanist Andrey Krasnov and is among the best botanical gardens at the Black Sea coast.

The Garden territory at present covers the area of 108,7 ha comprising the following 9 phyto-geographical departments: East Asian, North American, New Zealand, South American, Himalayan, Mexican, Australian, Mediterranean (European) and Transcaucasia humid subtropics.

Gonio Fortress is a well-preserved Roman fortification (1st century). Located on the left bank of the River Chorokhi the fortress is 12 km south of Batumi and just 4 km from the border with Turkey. The site is believed to hold the tomb of the Apostle Mathew – one of Christ’s disciples.

The fortress is connected with the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. As the legend says this is the exact place where Medea’s brother Apsirtus caught Jason who stole Golden Fleece and his sister.
